Fisher Island was created in 1905 through dredging and land reclamation. Named after Carl G. Fisher a land developer and automotive parts pioneer. The island was traded in 1925 to the Vanderbilt family in exchange for a luxury yacht.

After the Vanderbilts, the island was sold to US Steel heir Edward Moore. After that Gar Wood bought it in the 50's. In 1963, Wood sold the Fisher Island to a development group that included local millionaire Bebe Rebozo, Senator George Smathers and at the time Vice President Richard Nixon.
